We are delighted to welcome Andrea Millington to our workshop family.

Spend a creative morning with Andrea Millington experimenting with fabric, thread and colour as you learn how to make your own hand-stitched rope bowl. In this relaxed, hands-on workshop, you’ll explore how simple hand-stitching techniques can transform rope and fabric into a beautiful three-dimensional bowl that is completely personal to you.

Andrea will guide you through the process step by step, including:

  • Selecting fabric and wrapping it onto the rope

  • Using basic hand stitches to join and build your bowl

  • Working with angle and tension to create shape

  • Using stitching to introduce texture and decorative detail

  • Experimenting with colour and fabric combinations for eye-catching results

You will also look at other ways you can use this versatile technique and discuss different creations you could go on to make at home. It’s a wonderfully portable project and a great way to use up fabric scraps, recycle favourite fabrics and create something truly unique.

This workshop is suitable for beginners, so you don’t need previous sewing experience.

You will need to be able to independently thread a hand-sewing needle, and some dexterity in your hands and fingers is required for the stitching and wrapping involved.

All materials are supplied but if you have a piece of dressmaking or quilting-weight fabric that you would particularly like to use, you’re very welcome to bring it along. Please bring the fabric uncut.

Please also bring:

  • Glasses, if you use them for close work

  • A pair of fabric scissors if you prefer to use your own, particularly if you are left-handed, as left-handed scissors are not available

Come along, enjoy playing with colour and texture, and spend a few relaxing hours discovering a lovely hand-stitching technique — leaving with your own handmade rope bowl and plenty of inspiration for what to create next.

About Andrea Millington

Based in Mid Cornwall, Andrea Millington is a textiles artist and teacher with a BA in Fashion from Southampton Institute and PGCE in Design & Technology from Exeter University. After 22 years teaching in a school, Andrea decided to take her skills and knowledge apply it differently in the form of workshops and classes.  Andrea has been developing and teaching workshops since 2015 alongside her school role. Then in 2018 the opportunity to take this to a wider audience came along.

Andrea designs work using rope, fabric, thread, and embellishments to create useful and attractive range of bowls, coasters, bags, and wall art.  Each piece explores colour, shape and texture which can be influenced by the land and sea around Cornwall or the materials themselves, evolving into unique designs.
