The Magic of Stop Motion Animation for Kids this summer

We are thrilled to welcome our long term supporters and friends , Marisa and Leon to the talented crew who run workshops for us. They will be running our first ever kids workshop which will provide an introduction to stop motion animation. Stop motion animation is a filmmaking technique where physical objects are moved in tiny steps and photographed one frame at a time. When played back fast, the objects look like they are moving on their own. Key styles include claymation, puppet animation, and cutout animation. Wallace and Gromit films use the claymation technique.

This workshop uses cutout animation with flat 2D materials - paper and card cutouts moved on a flat surface.

This fun, hands-on workshop introduces young people to the fascinating world of stop motion animation. In a relaxed and supportive environment, participants will discover how animated films are created while developing creativity, storytelling, problem-solving and patience through making their own short animation.

Designed especially for beginners, children will be guided step by step as they create a poseable paper puppet, design a miniature set, and learn the techniques needed to bring their characters to life using stop motion animation.

During the workshop, participants will:

• Create their own poseable paper puppet character.

• Design and build a miniature stage for their animation.

• Learn the fundamentals of stop motion animation.

• Animate and film a short scene using their new skills and techniques.

All materials and equipment are provided, and no previous experience is necessary. By the end of the session, each participant will have created their own animated scene on video. Places are limited to ensure plenty of individual support, so early booking is recommended.

Workshop leaders are both DBS certified.

Marisa Moore

Marisa Moore is a multi-discipline visual artist, working primarily as an illustrator. As well as client-based commercial work, Marisa works under the name Circles and Serpents with work spanning illustration, writing and animation.

Leon Toumi

Leon Toumi is a filmmaker and job coach with a background in construction and set building. He is passionate about helping young people bring their ideas to life through filmmaking workshops.

The photo shows them together (suitably pleased with themselves) next to the trail board of the award winning Lostwithiel Town Trail that both Marisa and Leon worked on , creating the illustrations and films.
