We are delighted to have four new pieces from Philip Lyons, who has been with us in the Gallery since we first opened.

South Coastal Town - 40 x 120cm

Philip uses subtle colours and strong pattern in his compositions – locking them together to make a firm structure. He pays attention to the surface of the paintings to create areas that have a sense of history (telling a story).  There are accents of strong colour to anchor the composition.

Philip looks for modest, everyday events and views, such as looking out from a window, light passing over a field, a glimpse of the sea over the rooftops and everyday objects .

Philip likes to use his home environment where he looks for natural frameworks and grids, such as windows, doorways, shadows and shapes of objects in rooms.

About Philip

Philip Lyons was born in Devon in 1955. From a young age he was interested in drawing and has very strong memories of his early years by the sea. In 1975 he went to Bristol College of Art and design where the main theme of his work centred on colour and colour theory. In 1988 Philip trained at Goldsmiths College in London as an art therapist.

He went on to work with children in the Health Service in Cornwall. Working as a therapist influenced his painting considerably, leading to a more playful way of creating paintings and a simplification of shape and colour.

Philip has lived and exhibited his paintings in Cornwall since 1989. He tends to paint places he knows well, returning to them frequently throughout the seasons. He has work in prestigious public collections, including Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro, Palace of Westminster, London, Falmouth Art Gallery, Falmouth and Devon County Council Art Collection. He has exhibited in commercial galleries in London and the South West.
