We are always excited to get new artwork in from our artists and we have some really interesting new paintings from Nickie Carlyon.

The spirit bears in this series of paintings started from a series of works Nickie produced about her mother's early childhood on Vancouver Island. She discovered after she completed the work that these bears only exist in northern British Columbia in Canada. They are brown bears that have a recessive gene (like redheads in humans). The First Nations myth is that the creator (raven) turned every tenth black bear white.
These white bears were created to serve as a reminder of the Ice Age, when the world was covered in ice, and symbolized peace and the importance of protecting the land. This message is becoming more important day by day!

Nickie's artist statement
I have been a practising artist since 2012 and am based at Trewidden studios, Penzance. I am a painter and story teller whose practice moves fluidly between the figurative and the landscapes in my head.
My work explores the spaces where what I see meets imagination, where the familiar in the natural world become something more symbolic, lyrical and dreamlike.
Animals, flowers and figures appear frequently throughout my paintings not simply as subjects
but as recurring motifs that carry a narrative and emotional resonance. These elements act as guides through the landscape, inviting the viewer into intimate, often quietly surreal environments.
Rooted in a deep sensitivity to nature and place, my discipline is shaped by a balance of structure and intuition: The result is a body of work that feels both grounded and other worldly, reflecting the beauty, mystery and interconnectedness of the living world.
Other new pieces that we have also look back to scenes from the past.
